Common Questions About the AI Floor Plan Studio
Get quick answers to the most common questions about designing and visualizing your home with AI.
Getting Started
What is Maket?
Maket is an AI floor plan generator and creator that lets anyone design residential floor plans in minutes. Generate new plans from your requirements, upload and edit existing ones, or explore renovations and additions. Visualize your project from conceptual sketches to photorealistic renders. All in one simple workspace. No architecture degree, no CAD software, no learning curve.
How does it work?
Tell Maket what you need in plain language: the rooms, approximate square footage, house shape, and any priorities. The AI generates several floor plan options you can compare side by side, usually in about 90 seconds. Then open any option in the layout editor to move rooms around, resize them, drag walls, and reposition doors and windows until the plan is exactly what you want.
Can AI really generate floor plans?
Yes. Unlike general-purpose tools such as ChatGPT, Maket is purpose-built for residential architecture. Its generative AI produces real, editable floor plans with accurate dimensions and proper room adjacencies. Every plan opens in a layout editor where you can move rooms, adjust walls, and swap openings, then furnish it, render it in 3D, and export it.
How long does it take?
Most floor plans generate in around 90 seconds, though more complex multi-floor layouts can take a few minutes. Render generation takes approximately 60 to 90 seconds. Iterative edits through the chat interface apply in seconds for simple changes and up to a couple of minutes for structural reorganizations.
How do I design a floor plan for my house?
Start by describing what you need: the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, target square footage, the shape of the house, and any priorities like an open kitchen or a main-floor office. Maket generates several layouts to compare. Pick the closest one and refine it in the layout editor, moving rooms, resizing them, and adjusting walls until it fits your lot and the way you live.
What should I expect from my first generated plan?
A strong starting point, not a finished house. Maket generates several layout options that attempt to respect your rooms, square footage, and shape, but the first result is meant to be compared and refined, not built as-is. Plan to open the one you like best in the layout editor and move rooms, adjust walls, and fine-tune it. Most people iterate a few times before they are happy.
How accurate are the floor plans?
Maket generates floor plan concepts with accurate dimensions and sensible room adjacencies. If something isn't right for your site, the layout editor lets you move rooms and adjust walls to correct it. They are strong starting points rather than construction documents; a licensed professional should verify the plan before permitting or building.
Can I paste a long design brief or text prompt from ChatGPT or Claude into Maket?
No. Maket does not work from long text prompts or design briefs, and the input is limited to 300 characters. The floor plan generator works best when you follow the step-by-step process on screen: rooms, square footage, house shape, then priorities. Those answers give it exact constraints to build from. Once the plan is generated, refine it in the layout editor rather than rewriting the prompt.
Can I edit an existing floor plan?
Yes. Upload a PNG, JPG, or PDF of your current plan and Maket converts it into an editable project. In the layout editor you can move rooms to new positions, resize them, drag walls, and relocate doors and windows, testing new configurations without redrawing anything. Plan upload is available on paid plans; Homeowner includes one AI-assisted upload per month.
Can Maket recreate the floor plan of my existing house?
Yes, two ways. If you have a blueprint or an old plan as a PDF, JPG, or PNG, upload it and Maket's recognizer turns it into an editable project. If you don't, measure your rooms and draw the plan from scratch in the layout editor, placing walls and openings to match your home. Either way, you can then move rooms, test changes, and render the result.
What types of floor plans can Maket generate?
Maket generates residential floor plans for single-family homes, duplexes, ADUs, renovations, and additions, from one to four stories. You specify room types, square footage, architectural shape, and design style. Every plan comes with accurate dimensions and can be reshaped in the layout editor, where rooms can be moved and resized to suit your site.
Do I need to download anything?
No. Maket runs entirely in your web browser, so there is nothing to install and nothing to update. Your projects are saved in the cloud and accessible from any computer. A modern browser with JavaScript enabled is all you need to generate, edit, and render.
Does Maket work on a phone or tablet?
No. Maket is not built for mobile devices. It runs in a laptop or desktop browser, because the layout editor needs a full screen to move rooms, drag walls, and place furniture with precision. We believe a home design project deserves that space, so use a computer for all of your Maket work.
How do I save, find, or delete a project?
Maket saves your work automatically as you go, so there is no save button to remember. Everything about your projects, including opening, renaming, duplicating, and deleting them, lives in the Projects section, which you can reach from the home page after signing in. Deleted projects cannot be recovered.

Features
Can I design a home with multiple floors?
Yes. Maket generates plans from one to four stories, and each floor opens in its own view in the layout editor so you can move rooms and adjust walls floor by floor. Multi-floor generation is included on paid plans; the Free plan covers single-floor projects.
Can I draw a floor plan from scratch?
Yes. If you'd rather not generate, open a blank canvas and draw walls, place rooms, and add doors and windows directly in the layout editor. You can move and resize rooms at any point as the plan takes shape. Everything you draw can be furnished, rendered in 3D, and exported like a generated plan.
Can I specify exact dimensions?
Yes. Enter your lot size, total square footage and Maket generates layouts that respect them. It works in both metric and imperial units. After generation, the layout editor lets you drag walls to precise positions and resize individual rooms, so the final plan matches real site constraints.
Does Maket calculate square footage and room areas?
Yes. The dimensions panel shows the floor area and exterior dimensions for each floor, and individual room areas are available in the inspection panel. These update as you move walls or resize rooms in the layout editor, so you can see the effect of a change on square footage immediately.
Can I furnish the rooms and change finishes?
Yes. Once the layout is set, place and rearrange furniture in each room, then test flooring, wall colours, ceilings, doors, windows, and exterior finishes. Swapping styles updates the whole plan at once, so you can compare looks before rendering and see how the layout works as a lived-in space.
Can I bring in my own furniture?
Yes. Upload a simple image of a piece of furniture and Maket turns it into a custom asset that works in both the 2D plan and 3D renders. You set its real dimensions so it sits correctly, then place and move it in any room. This is useful for matching pieces you already own or sell.
Can Maket help me find the best layout for a room?
Yes. Generate a few versions of the plan and compare how each handles the room, then open the layout editor to move walls, shift the door, or resize the space and see what works. Once the shape is right, use Auto-Furnish: select the room type and Maket lays out the furniture for you, so you can check circulation and sightlines right away. Render it to see how the layout feels in 3D.
Can I use Maket for interior design?
Yes. Once you have a layout, furnish each room, then switch to 3D using the 2D/3D toggle. You get three views, Isometric, Walkthrough, and Massing, plus a text box where you describe what you want to see, from specific materials and finishes to the time of day and location. Maket generates detailed renderings from that. To go further, the Explore Images tab generates variations of any rendering, so you can compare paint colours, furniture, and materials side by side.
Can I redesign a single room, like a kitchen or bedroom?
Yes, in two ways. Upload a plan of the space and rework its layout in the editor, moving walls, openings, and furniture until it fits. Or use the Explore Images tab to generate variations of a rendering of your room, which is ideal for trying different materials, furniture, paint colours, and finishes without changing the layout.
Can Maket create exterior renders?
Yes. Once you have a floor plan, Maket can visualize it in 3D, from quick conceptual views to photorealistic renders of the finished home. You can swap styles, test materials, paint, and finishes, and walk through rooms in 3D. Renders typically take 60 to 90 seconds to generate.
Why do my renders change between generations?
Each render is generated fresh, so materials, lighting, and small details can vary between runs even with the same prompt. That is expected. Generate a few versions and pick the one you like, and be specific in the prompt about materials, time of day, and style. To iterate on a render you like, use Explore Images to create variations from it.

The best AI floor plan generator depends on your workflow. Maket is built for residential projects, with tools for generating editable plans, refining layouts, and visualizing them in 3D. See our comparison of the best AI floor plan generators for a broader breakdown.
What's the difference between Maket and AutoCAD, SketchUp, or Revit?
CAD software requires drawing every element manually, line by line, and takes training to use well. Maket generates complete floor plans from a set of constraints in minutes, then gives you a visual layout editor where you move rooms and walls directly. Many professionals use Maket for fast ideation and client options, then export to DXF for final documentation.
How does Maket compare to Planner 5D or Floorplanner?
Planner 5D and Floorplanner are manual drag-and-drop tools: you place every wall and room yourself from a blank canvas. Maket's AI generates full layouts from your requirements first, giving you a faster starting point and more options. You then refine in the same kind of visual editor, moving rooms and adjusting walls as needed.
Can I use ChatGPT to generate a floor plan?
Yes, but with real limitations. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude can produce floor plan images, but they are static pictures: you cannot move a room, check a dimension, furnish a space, or export the file. Maket creates real, editable layouts you can rearrange in its editor, with accurate measurements, 3D rendering, and sharing built in.

Collaboration & Exports
Can I collaborate with my builder or architect?
Yes. Share your project with a link so your builder or architect can view it, or export it as a PDF or DXF to bring into their own tools. PDF and DXF exports are available on paid plans, which also let you control who can view or edit the project.
Can I export to PDF or DXF?
Yes. Paid plans include PDF and DXF export, along with render downloads. DXF files open in AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, and most other CAD software, so a professional can continue detailed drafting from your layout. PDFs are ideal for sharing with contractors, clients, and planning teams.
What file formats can I upload?
Maket accepts PDF, JPG, and PNG files. For the best results with the floor plan recognizer, upload a clean blueprint or an existing plan rather than a rough sketch or photo. Maket turns it into an editable project, so you can move rooms, adjust walls, furnish, and render just like a generated plan. If the recognizer runs into trouble with your plan, our team can step in and assist. Plan upload is available on paid plans.
Can I upload DWG or DXF files from AutoCAD?
Not directly. Maket accepts PDF, JPG, and PNG. If you have a plan in AutoCAD or another CAD tool, export it as a PDF and upload that; the recognizer turns it into an editable project where you can move rooms and adjust walls. When you're done, export back out as DXF to continue in CAD.
What happens if Maket doesn't recognize my uploaded plan correctly?
Recognition works best on clean blueprints and can miss details on dense or low-quality plans. If something is off, you can fix it yourself in the layout editor by moving walls, resizing rooms, and adding or relocating doors and windows. If the plan needs more work than that, our team can step in, review the upload, and clean it up for you.
Can I invite others to view my project?
Yes. Every project can be shared with a link, and you control whether each person can only view it or also edit. This makes it easy to get feedback from family, a builder, or a client without sending files back and forth. Link sharing is included on the Free plan.

Pricing & Plans
Is Maket free to try?
Yes. Our Free plan includes 30 one-time credits with no credit card required, so you can explore Maket and decide whether it meets your needs before purchasing. Some advanced features, including Floor Plan Upload, require a paid plan. See pricing for full details.
How do credits work?
Credits are what you spend on AI actions. Generating or uploading a floor plan uses 20 credits, generating a render uses 10, and running an optimization uses 5. Moving rooms, adjusting walls, and other edits in the layout editor are free. The Free plan includes 30 one-time credits; paid plans add a monthly allowance.
Do I get my credits back if a generation or upload fails?
Yes. Credits should only be deducted when Maket completes an action for you. If an operation fails, our system can sometimes still deduct credits, which is a mistake on our side. If that happens, reach out to our support team with the email associated with your paid plan and we will be happy to add the credits back to your account.
Does Maket have an API?
API access is available on the Scale plan, designed for teams with high project volume or custom requirements. The Scale plan also includes custom generation models, custom materials, bulk portfolio imports, and a tailored credit allowance. Contact the Maket sales team to discuss API access and Scale plan setup.
Is pricing per seat? Can my team share credits?
Homeowner and Pro are individual accounts, each with its own monthly credit allowance. For teams, the Scale plan is not priced per seat: it includes unlimited users who draw from one shared credit pool, with a tailored allowance based on your volume. Contact sales to set up a team workspace.
Can I change or cancel my plan?
Yes. You can change or cancel your plan at any time from your account settings. Upgrades take effect immediately. Downgrades and cancellations take effect at the end of your current billing period, so you keep access until then. After that, you lose access to premium features and the higher monthly credit allowance of your paid plan.
Does Maket offer refunds?
Subscription fees and credit purchases are generally non-refundable. Credits have no monetary value and cannot be exchanged for cash. If you believe there is a billing error, you must notify Maket within 7 days of the charge. Contact help@maket.ai for questions about your specific situation.
Other Questions
Do I still need an architect?
For early design, Maket lets you reach a clear vision much faster. For permits and construction documents, a licensed architect or engineer is typically required, and they should review any design against your site conditions and local building codes. You can use Maket as a starting point, bringing your plans to an architect, which saves billable hours.
Will AI replace architects?
No. AI tools like Maket handle the early, exploratory part of design: generating layout options quickly and letting you test ideas before anyone draws a line in CAD. Architects and engineers still make the decisions that require judgment, site knowledge, and licensure, and they produce the construction documents a build requires. Maket makes that handoff faster and better informed.
How is a Maket plan different from an architect's drawings?
A Maket plan is a design-stage starting point: a dimensioned layout with room placement, openings, furniture, and renders that define what you want to build. It is not a full construction document set. Architects and engineers produce those, including structural, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing drawings.
Does Maket check building codes or zoning?
No. Maket generates layouts that attempt to follow residential design best practices, but it does not verify them against local building codes, zoning rules, setbacks, or permit requirements. Those vary by municipality and site, so a licensed architect, engineer, or your local building department should review the plan before you apply for permits or begin construction.
